Monday Motivation: Ulander
Growing up in a township where the majority of the population is either has primary, secondary education or possibly illiterate… Tertiary education was never preached to me as a child. Getting to Matric is seen as such a big achievement and actually finishing Matric is seen as the epitome of success. Don't get me wrong I understand the excitement that people have with finishing matric, you see... When you imagine our reality that consists of people only having late primary and early secondary grades as their highest level of education, it only makes sense why Grade 12 is seen as the highest level of educational success.
Growing up I always loved reading and learning new topics and themes; my love for reading coupled with my inquisitive mind always made me question things and I was never comfortable with settling for what was seen as the norm. So I knew from an early age that only having my Matric would not work for me. In school, I always gave my ultimate best and made sure that I got good marks that would allow me to reach my dreams.
One thing I have learnt about education is that education does not only stop at school and one should always pace themselves according to their own standards but never settle for mediocrity. Now doing my second year I realised that having an education does not only expose me to opportunities that I never thought I would experience but it has also allowed me to meet and make friends with people from different backgrounds and eliminate stereotypes that I may have had.
Now just like anything in life, it does get hard in school and there may be times where one feels like “is this really worth it?”. I know I've been there, I strive for a better future, I need to change the perspective of the youth in my community to view education as something important to have.. that is what drives me.
These are my favourite quotes regarding getting educated:
Dreams can only be realised once you start taking action upon achieving them.
